To illustrate how visual writing works, and compare it to other forms of writing, let's create an object in your mind. This is a mystery object - you really don't know what is in it - and we're going to solve the mystery at the end. Let's call this mystery object xxxx. The word "xxxx" is a symbol. It simply stands for (points to) this mystery object and what is in it. Let's go one step further. Lets also have a picture yyyy to represent this mystery object. This picture is also a symbol. It simply stands for (points to) this mystery object and what is in it. Let's go another step further. Let's have a sound represent this mystery object. The sound is a muted chime. Make up a chime and hear it in your head so that you can hear the chime every time you see the words, "chime 1." Let's add one more symbol, a situation. The situation is when Johnny hurries in to see Patty. Whenever this happens, you think of the mystery object. Fill the mystery object with static symbols. Then add experiences from the person's past. Now we have a symbol that is unique to the individual, but which everyone can relate to and understand.
